Pat Robertson said what?

There seems to be a large uprising of unhappy people including mediamatters.org, they are all up in arms about what Mr. Roberts said.  Did you hear his statements? Here it is…

PAT ROBERTSON: And, you know, Kristi, something happened a long time ago in Haiti, and people might not want to talk about it. They were under the heel of the French. You know, Napoleon III and whatever. And they got together and swore a pact to the devil. They said, “We will serve you if you will get us free from the French.” True story. And so, the devil said, “OK, it’s a deal.”
And they kicked the French out. You know, the Haitians revolted and got themselves free. But ever since, they have been cursed by one thing after the other. Desperately poor. That island of Hispaniola is one island. It’s cut down the middle. On the one side is Haiti; on the other side is the Dominican Republic. Dominican Republic is prosperous, healthy, full of resorts, et cetera. Haiti is in desperate poverty. Same island. They need to have and we need to pray for them a great turning to God. And out of this tragedy, I’m optimistic something good may come. But right now, we’re helping the suffering people, and the suffering is unimaginable.
KRISTI WATTS (co-host): Absolutely, Pat.

How to you verify that? I was interested in what he said because he did make a good point. Contrast Haiti with the Dominican and you have to wonder how on half of the island -comparatively- can be doing so well while the other half is falling apart. I don’t care if you think Pat is a crackpot. You have to admit that is an interesting point. I do not think Pat is a crackpot. Plenty of people with good intentions make crazy statements that make us wonder about their sanity. Well, Pat has me wondering.  Anyway is there any truth to what he said?

I did find this…

“The slaves brought from Africa went through many, many years of so much cruel treatment and atrocious sufferings from the slave masters in complicity with the Catholic Church who blessed the slave market and thought that black was the colour of the devil, therefore black slaves didn’t have a soul. That terrible situation caused the slaves to turn away from our loving God in heaven to their tribal gods of Africa for help. On August 14, 1791 a leader named Boukman called for a secret meeting with many other slaves in a forest called Bois-Caiman near Cap-Haitian where they had a satanic ceremony, killed a pig, and drank the blood, swearing and dedicating Haiti to serve the devil. All Haitian historians believe and teach that Haiti’s independence in 1804 came from that satanic ceremony.

“For 206 years Bois-Caiman has been a very sacred high place for the devil where no one could ever set foot, except the witch doctors when having voodoo services. Every year for 206 years on August 14 all the witch doctors would meet there to offer sacrifices to the devil. In 1991 the government renewed that contract with the devil. As we can all see the Pearl of the Antilles had become a land of great suffering, misery, political tensions, and instability.”

Also some info here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dutty_Boukman

“A pig… and untamable spiritual power of the forest and the ancestors, was sacrificed, an oath was taken…”

What oath was taken? Was it an oath to the devil? If they did that would mean people would have to admit there is a devil. Then they would have to admit there is a God. But since everyone thinks they know there is no god there cant be a devil and they all are descendants of single cell amoeba.  You know, these people having a single cell as a parent could explain a lot.

So I also found this site that has not been PC sanitized…

On 14 August 1791, a black slave and witch doctor named Boukman led the slaves in a voodoo ritual. They sacrificed a pig and drank its blood to form a pact with the devil, whereby they agreed to serve the spirits of the island for 200 years in exchange for freedom from the French. The slave rebellion commenced on 22 August 1791, and after 13 years of conflict, the slaves won their independence. On 1 January 1804 they declared Haiti the world’s first independent black republic. An iron statue of a pig stands in Port-au-Prince to commemorate the “Boukman Contract”

In light of the historic and political facts it is therefore very interesting that in April 2003, President Aristide made voodoo an official religion in Haiti declaring, “voodoo is an essential part of national identity.”

This doesn’t prove anything. How can we really know if they made a pact, or even if they did why an earthquake now and not 50 years or 100 years ago? I would have to say we have some facts mixed in with opinion and its hart to tell them apart.

Here are the facts; 85% of the population claim to be catholic and Voodoo is the official religion of Haiti.  And you think a deal with the devil is outlandish?
